Bauman College is pleased to announce the launch of our new Community Outreach Department. The Outreach Department provides graduate and student volunteer opportunities, ongoing free nutrition lectures, community cooking classes, Farmer's Market demonstrations, turn-key Community Education Programs, and sponsorship for select events. We aim to increase Bauman College's impact in our local and national communities, to build relationships with other notable non-profits and causes, and to develop volunteer and graduate employment occasions in the community.
Kidz for Health Kidz for Health is a 6-week after school nutrition-cooking-fitness program for elementary school children that focuses on nutrition education, healthy food preparation, culinary skills, and fitness. -Developed by Nancy Birang, Bauman College Santa Cruz Faculty, and sponsored by Bauman College and Live Earth Farm, Watsonville, CA.
Children in the Santa Cruz school districts are learning that Eating for Health is tasty and fun! Bauman College and Kidz For Health have been offering after school programs at Gault and Live Oak Elementary schools since 2007.
Each week, a different theme is presented: Week One: The Fantastic Five Food Groups
"I used to not like vegetables, but now I do."
"I didn't know that eating healthy tastes good." "Yoga makes me feel good, I'm going to teach it to my Dad, he needs it, he's crazy!" Transitional NutritionTransitional Nutrition work with formerly-homeless residents living in Transitional Housing to improve their nutrition, cooking, and budgeting skills through weekly hands-on classes and skill-building workshops.
On September 28th, 16 low-income residents from the Mary Isaak Center Transitional Housing unit in Petaluma, California crowded into a conference room for the first Transitional Nutrition class in the 8-week series. The program is multi-faceted, and in addition to weekly education, we are thrilled to be able to partner with the Petaluma Bounty Farm and COTS to provide each resident weekly with a fresh, organic CSA box of produce. This is an integral part of the program to open up access to the vibrant, local fruit and vegetable surplus in our community, and encourage the practice of recipes and skills learned in class. Bauman College staff also works weekly with the Petaluma Kitchen and the Petaluma Kitchen Apprentices, who provide much of the cooked food to the Mary Isaak Center, to improve the flavor and nutrition content of the food prepared for the Shelter population. We hope to begin to create a culture of wellness within this very under-served population and to encourage the replication of a sustainable wellness model within the surrounding areas that we serve.
