I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this or know anyone who does. My son is 17 years old, is 6'4" and went from weighing 160 down to 145 in the last 6 months. He says every morning upon waking he feels nauseated and throws up (approximately 3 times per month) due to this. He went to the Dr. last week (he hadn't told me about it until just recently), and he had a blood draw & will have tests for GERD (esophageal lining, etc). The Dr. recommended antacids at night before bed to see if he wakes up less nauseated. Seems to me that throwing an antacid at this won't be of help, but would instead add insult to injury. Any thoughts??
Thanks a bunch,

Oh, another thing: the Dr. suspects this could be related to a testosterone imbalance as my son enters adulthood??

Hi Kris,

When it comes to this symptom, it can be tricky. Nausea and vomiting can be related to liver, gall bladder or small intestines malfunction. If it's frequent, it can be parasympathetic nervous system dominace.

I used to experience this quite often as well as really bad reflux/indigestion and seasonal allergies that lasted more than a season.  I know people say it all the time but eliminating gluten/dairy completely eliminated everything. I wondered for years what was causing my morning nausea and it usually stemmed from my GERD symptoms while I was sleeping.  I never felt like my food was digesting properly even many hours after my last meal.  I removed gluten/dairy and it was like night and day.

This may not be the case for your son but maybe look at his diet and maybe there are some things that are causing some sort of inflammation or allergy.  If he does consume gluten/dairy just have him eliminate it from his diet just to rule things out.  Another thing that you may want to look into is drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee/tee or hot chocolate at night.

Best of luck!

Thank you both for your feedback. It's tough to really nail down a 17 year olds diet, but will definitely give that a shot with him.  Undecided

If he is having any type of acid reflux/GERD I would suggest a food sensitivity panel like the LEAP test, it has really helped all of my clients with this same problem.

This is an update to my post in September..since then I have seen a Kinesiolohist and have eliminated gluten from my diet.  My blood tests show I am NOT gluten intolerant but the sensitivity test the kinesiologist showed a reaction.  Immediatly after eliminating the gluten from my diet my morning natiousness is gone.

yay! That is what happened to me but it was with Dairy. No more dairy = no more throwing up (3 months of it in 8th grade was enough)

Vanessa & all,
Thanks so much for your posts. Vanessa: weirdest thing...my son says coffee makes his nausea feel better! I took him to an ND and we were both wondering how that could be since it's so acidic. The ND also recommended removing gluten from his diet, but as a 17 y/o who lives on sandwiches, pizza, gyros, etc...he said the nausea would have to be worse than it is for him to give that up, lol.
He has gained some weight back anyway, but is still too thin.

I was having similar problems and found that I wasn't making enough stomach acid (due to some B vitamin deficiencies and other things). I read the book, "Why Stomach Acid is Good For You" and it made sense - usually people use antacids, but the opposite is what is needed in many cases.

Using some lemon helped and increasing B vitamins, esp. B6 helped me. And I used hydrocholoric acid. I helped another lady whose son was having serious problems with too much acid - told her to read the book, give her kid some lemon and he never had the acidity problem again.

Of course, it could be more than that, but that's a start and the book isn't too expensive. Smiley
