Last year, I and my colleagues from the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) went to Sacramento to vehemently oppose AB 575. We succeeded, though we were told it is a two year bill, so it could very well return for another vote.

With the new year, we contacted the congresswoman who brought this repressive legislation on the table last year and argued it protected the public from unprofessional practices, this is what we heard in response.

"Regarding state Assembly Bill 575 concerning Dietetic and Nutrition Practice, sponsored by the American Dietetic Association (ADA) Elisa Silva in Ms. Hayashi's office indicates they have no immediate plans to "pick it up" and that it likely will "just die" unless "something" happens over the next few months."

When NANP contacted Jim Gross (really) the lobbyist for the ADA, he concurred that they were not going to resubmit the 2011 version of AB575 bill or craft a new one in 2012.

This is very good news and an affirmation that there is one profession of nutrition with several different valid approached. (Ed Bauman)

For now, this is great news!
