Is this an immediate, acute allergy or delayed? Is it just to onions or a particular type of onion, or to the entire allium family?

Some people with onion allergies appear to be able to tolerate a little green onion; some seem to do OK with a small amount of onion that's been cooked. Theory being that it's the sulfur people react to, and you can eliminate some of it by boiling the onions and draining the water. Otherwise, wow, I can't think of anything that would come close to its wonderful flavor. Crunch you can get from celery or jicama, but the flavor can't be so easily substituted.

Hi Jodi,

Yes, it's the onion family, unfortunately.

Thanks,
Denise

Don't loose hope! I've successfully satisfied the palates of allium sensitive folks with this culinary magic....

Fun-nions:
1 serving
1 medium fennel bulbs (sliced or diced like the onions your desire)
1/4 t Aseofetida (aka Hing, sold as an Indian spice)
1/4 t ghee (or oil of choice)
Sea salt to taste

Wet sautee the fennel bulbs (med high heat, adding small amounts of water to de-glaze often) until the desired caramelization (light caramelized brown is best). then add oil, salt and aseofetida to taste.

What is aseofetida?

Enjoy!
