Hello!

One of my relatives exhibits signs of heavy metal toxicity and has been using chemically laden hair dyes and make up for years now.  I would like to recommend a safer, non toxic hair dye alternative.  Does anyone have any ideas of a good brand?

Hi Dinene!

The only natural hair dye I've tried is henna. The color turned out great and it even conditioned my hair. The website for more information is http://www.hennaforhair.com/  It washes out after a month, so you have to redo it, but it doesn't damage the hair or cause heavy metal toxicity like the chemical based hairdyes.  Natural food stores usually carry henna.   Grin Julie

Hi Dinene

Besides using henna, Aveda is an incredibly wonderful company offering excellent natural hair coloring & products that support colored hair.  The color actually works to your benefit, so instead of damaging the hair, it nourishes it &  strengthens it.  I used to work for Aveda, so if you find an Aveda salon in your area ask them about the process & they'll explain.  Good luck!

Surya brand cream-style henna is supposed to work very well, and is toxin free.  They make a powder, too.  Two other "natural" brands to look into are Naturtint and Herbavita Herbatint, if they are not the same.  Dr. Shen's Shou Wu is the name of a chinese herbal supplement that is supposed to support anti-graying action in the hair.  ?
Aubrey Organics makes non-toxic lip colors and perfumes
Look at Ecco Bella and Zuzu for make-up, but I'm not sure how clean they are.
Elephant Pharmacy has an estetician (spelling?) on staff, too.

I can help you with healthy make-up and Body Care Products.
I found the products through a friend at Bauman College. All ingredients are food grade! You can find more info on my website or you can call me at (707) 480-4930.

There are several excellent information resources online that you can reference.

http://www.ewg.org/
http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/ (huge searchable product database)
http://www.lesstoxicguide.ca/
http://www.safecosmetics.org/index.cfm

Here is a good article about these problems as well, with some links at the end to further resources.

I picked up my natural hair dye in Wholefoods. I can't remember the brand name off hand, but they carry two brands - both natural.
