I have a friend who has gestational diabetes.  The doctor wants her to take insulin injections because it does not seem to be able to be controlled through diet.  Does anyone have any information on alternative approaches?

Thanks

Your friend will have to strictly control her diet. No sugar what so ever, no fruit, carrots, beets, obviously no refined carbs, bread, pasta  etc... Have her eat 3-5 small meals a day with lots of protein, seeds and green and crunchy veggies. Be sure to check food labels as there are often hidden sugars (in salad dressings etc).

There is a good product from Jarro that she can buy at the Natural Food store called Glucose Optimizer, or she can start with a GTF product. If her blood sugar isn't too far out of range her doctor may be willing to give her a month to try to control her blood sugar with diet. She will need to be vigilant. She can buy a test kit and test her blood sugar to see if she is able to manage it.

You can also share with her that Gestational Diabetes can be a warning sign for developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. Yet another good reason  to Eat for Health.
