Greetings  Friends and Fellow Evolutionaries,

2010 is a year of change.  What excites me is the growing respect and attention the natural health profession is receiving from the media and the scientific community.  Rather than being viewed as a quaint alternative healing modality, nutrition, culinary arts, and organic farming have been rediscovered as the foundation of physical,  mental, and ecological well being. Fresh, authentic foods from the garden to the table are making their way into schools, homes, businesses, care facilities, restaurants, and markets. Sustainable energy, agriculture, nutrition, and health care is THE conversation of this decade. We are in the right place at the right time with the right tools.

Bauman College has been, and continues to be, the industry leader in holistic health, nutrition, and culinary arts. We are thrilled to announce several new programs and services.  Our nutrition track has been streamlined, updated, and now offers a training program that includes a supervised internship for all students.  This new Nutrition Consultant (NC) format launches this fall (2010) at each of our locations and through our innovative Distance Learning format. NC is now composed of three terms: (1) Foundations of Nutrition, (2) Therapeutic Nutrition, and (3) Internship. Our goal is to train and support “job ready” graduates to work in community, school, business, and clinical settings.  Our greater aim is to bring the Eating For Health™ approach to insurance- and government-funded national wellness programs.

We are also proud to offer an exciting new community course, Nutrition Essentials for Everyone. This eight week series presents science-based nutrition information on the benefits of eating fresh, local, seasonal, and organic food through lecture, practical culinary demonstrations with tastings, and a personal behavior change segment wherein students commit to eat better, manage daily stress, and overcome decades of poor health habits. A Nutrition Essentials workbook is provided to support the lessons, offer fabulous recipes and cooking tips, and provide space for participants to report on their home practice.

The third area of new growth at Bauman College is our community outreach programs.  Staff, students, and graduates are getting out of the classroom to meet people where they live and work to inspire them to eat, move, think, and cooperate in a healthier way. To this end, we have designed and are implementing Kidz for Health programs in schools, a Transitional Nutrition program for formerly homeless residents living in transitional housing, and low-cost nutrition counseling services through our intern program.

I invite you to appreciate how your life would be enriched by becoming a Natural Chef or Nutrition Consultant. In doing so, you will be professionally qualified to join the National Association of Nutrition Professionals and work with unhealthy and often misinformed friends, family, and associates to Eat for Health. Interest in our work is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more people are seeking natural ways to recover their health and vitality and live better longer.

I wish you good eating, good thoughts, good feelings, and good health.

Calling all Bauman Grads, Students and Friends...  A fellow NE student requests your action!

On June 16, 2010, CNCP (Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion), a department of the USDA released a report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.  This report will be used to finalize the Dietary Guidelines of Americans, 2010.  At  www.LetsMove.gov you can view the report and offer comments, be it oral testimony before the committee in our Nation's capital, or offered on their forum.

The report contains some very positive ideas on the direction of our Nation's official diet, but it could use a little modification.  Please join me in this monumental step forward towards a more healthy America.  I will be speaking before the committee in response to the supplemental information related to the report in Resource 3, titled: Conventionally and Organically Produced Foods.  This report by Roger Clemens, DrPH  announces research "findings from limited studies were inconsistent relative to nutritional quantitative and qualitative differences between organic and conventionally produced food products.  This evidence suggests that it is premature to conclude that the nutritional value and purported health benefits of organic foods are better than those produced through conventional agricultural practices."

This forum and committee meeting is a chance to make a difference.  I am looking forward to hearing you in Washington or reading your posts on the forum!

Sincerely,
Amy Rupert Secol
