“The knowledge I gained at Bauman College has been essential for my work at Marin Organic”

Helge Hellberg, N.C. moved from Hamburg, Germany, to San Francisco ten years ago, in pursuit of a more meaningful, holistic life. Having chosen to eat organic foods already in Germany, Helge went to work for the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), one of the largest organic food certifiers in the United States. At CCOF, he learned about organic food production in the United States, but being in charge of marketing and communications, he soon realized there was a missing link between the farmer and the consumer who is mostly interested in nutrition and health. Only a few months after Helge had started his job at CCOF, he went to an open house at Bauman College in Santa Cruz and enrolled on the spot.

Helge graduated from Bauman College in the summer of 2003 as a Certified Nutrition Consultant and soon after, accepted the position as Executive Director of Marin Organic, an innovative association of organic food producers in Marin County. Marin Organic's goal is to create the first all-organic county in the nation, a county in which eaters and farmers acknowledge their mutual interdependence. The organization addresses economic, environmental, social, and cultural challenges in creative and innovative ways, and has become one of the leading voices of sustainable agriculture in the United States and beyond. Marin Organic is regularly hosting national and international guests, and Hellberg was responsible for the visit by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to Marin County in November of 2005.

As an authority in the field, Hellberg is a regular speaker on nutrition, sustainability, and food production at national and international conferences, and has served as an adviser to the U.S. Congress. He is currently working on a book about soil, nutrition, food, and spirituality, which is expected to be released in summer of 2008.
