Summer 2008 is providing numerous environmental challenges. Being exposed to extreme heat, wet floods or dry fires, we need to be even more vigilent in how we nourish our bodies. Well fed bodies will help us to meet the challenges around us with a better resistance and help to minimize the unavoidable stress.
California is suffering some of the worst air quality in years, due to the extreme number of fires currently burning. We offer you some tips on how to stay healthy in light of this heavy external pollution. With any health hazard, staying away or inside is the first and most important step. Get an air purifier going in your home, office or car. Now is also the time to increase consumption of foods rich in beta carotenes, vitamin A, C, E and Selenium and Zinc which will help protect your cells from the free radical damage caused by smoke. Mucous membranes get aggravated with smoke, so taking additional aloe vera with flax is cooling and healing. Smoothies with whey, greens, flax and fruits (found in Ed Bauman's Vital Scoop) help the liver detoxify burned particles that enter the blood stream. Seaweed, miso, algae and anti-inflammatory chai spices such as turmeric, ginger and fenugreek are also protective. Now is the time to apply the Eating for Health™ model with the addition of booster foods to your diet along with green tea with honey and lemon to provide soothing and protective vitamin C, bioflavonoids and chlorophyll.
Bauman College sends thoughts and prayers to everyone battling environmental challenges at this time, whether you are in the fire zone of the western states or the flooded midwest... we hold your health and peace in our circle.
Juicing for a strong summer
Summertime temps have us running for the fridge as our parched bodies call out for hydration. Be sure that you are providing your body with adequate clean water and healing teas throughout the day. In addition to clean water, juice is often on the table in the summer months, so make sure that you are drinking and providing your family with the highest quality refreshments. Read more about juice and juicing in this informative article by Bauman College's Helayne Waldman: To Juice or Not to Juice.
