June 2010 Newsletter

Bauman College begins fall courses soon, training students to prepare healthy, healing foods and to work with people on healthy eating habits.

Take some time to rejuvenate.

The long, warm, days of summer are here, inviting us to take a dip in the cool waters of a swimming pool, river, or ocean. Children are on break from school and filling the sunny days with friends and fun. The farmers markets are busy and full of fruit and summer squashes, just in time to marinate and bar-b-que some fresh zucchini, then throw some ripe strawberries or peaches in the blender with a little ice, coconut milk, and Vital Scoop™ for dessert. Here at Bauman College, we're gearing up for our popular summer Taste of Bauman College events and enrolling new students for the fall term with Early Bird Tuition Discounts. We encourage you to use this relaxing time of year to release whatever stress you hold and take some time to rejuvenate.

Two Angry Moms

Film Screening and Discussion

Did you know that 25% of children ages 5-10 years old show early warning signs for heart disease? Type 2 diabetes can no longer be called "adult onset" because of rising rates in children? The food children eat is so important to their health. The food they receive in school does not always support the choices we want for them. Healthy school food is a possibility. It is a right! Whole foods are necessary to build healthy bodies and healthy brains. We must support legislation that removes unhealthy ingredients from our schools. Join us at the Santa Cruz location of Bauman College to watch the film Two Angry Moms, a film that explores the roles of the federal government, corporate interest, school administration, and parents in the feeding of our country's school children. It offers successful and often inspirational examples of how to improve school food programs and make a difference in both the health of each child and the long-term health of the country. There will be time for discussion afterwards. There will also be a brief introduction to Kidz for Health™, a nutrition/cooking/fitness program for children.

Wednesday, June 16. 2010 • 6:30 – 8:00 PM
3912 Portola Drive, Suite 10
Santa Cruz, CA 95062

Kidz For Health™ Arrives in Boulder

This summer, the Boulder Farmer’s Market has a new interactive Kidz for Health™ booth that is staffed by Bauman College graduates and students. Kids experience first-hand the Heroes and Villains of the foods they eat by playing fun, exploratory games with the Nutrition Educators. The Heroes, which are healthy foods, reflect the seasonal harvest at the Market.

The kickoff Hero at last weekend's Farmer's Market was the strawberry and the Villain was strawberry soda, sweet juice, and sports drinks. The Bauman College demo presentation of Rethink Your Drink was easily incorporated. Look for us at the Boulder Farmer's Market throughout the summer.

What's In Season?

strawberry_harvest_editLong, warm days mean lots of fresh, jucy summer produce. In June, expect to see a lot of summer squashes (zucchinis, yellow crooknecks, and cucumbers), stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, and cherries), and berries (strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries). Here are a couple of recipes, courtesy of the Natural Chef Cookbook, that will help you to make good use of the bountiful summer produce: Cucumber Raita and Sunshine Fruit Crisp with Green Tea Syrup.

Recent studies have confirmed the benefits of eating organic foods. Eating local organic foods will further preserve nutrients, while at the same time sparing the earth, air, and our bodies from the toxins associated with long-distance food transport. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a powerhouse environmental organization, has an excellent local food database for all states so you will always know what your best choices are. Click HERE to access the NRDC Eat Local page and find out What's In Season near you!

Another way to guarantee fresh, local produce is to visit your Farmer's Market. Click HERE to find a Farmer's Market near you.
